| April to June 2005, Activity report From "Family Care" Coimbatore, South India |
| 3-DAY REGIONAL CONFERENCE FOR THE DEAF: |
| Family Care conducted the Regional Conference for the deaf leadership structure from 12 different cities of Tamilnadu and Kerala at Kodaikanalkanal from the April 21st - 24th , 2005. 35 attendees were exposed to 3 days of serious yet interesting and beneficial sessions on disciplining oneself to be positive in this negative world, using their God given talents to help and reach out to others, etc., There were group discussions and question and answer sessions every day. Games and music too were an integral part of the workshop. The attendees also got to watch the movie "Radio" which portrays beautiful principles of standing up and doing the right thing in spite of opposition, what a little bit of love can do to somebody! |
| AUDIO - VIDEO PRODUCTIONS: |
| Family Care has also started producing value-based VCDs with classes in sign language for the deaf. The deaf have been trained to work at editing and compiling the material onto CDs so the deaf in other cities also could benefit from the input. Much of this material will be used in the training sessions in other cities around South India. |
| REGULAR CLASSES: |
| The deaf instructors continue to travel to five cities twice a month to continue to impart the training they receive. |
| 3-DAY SUMMER LEADERSHIP TRAINING CAMP: |
| Family Care conducted a 3-day Summer camp, May 4th to 7th, at Coonoor ( a hill station in South India).
90 deaf people from 15 cities of Tamilnadu and Kerala attended the workshop and were thrilled to have escaped the summer heat in the plains. The core group of our deaf leaders planned, prepared, taught and videoed the classes as this is hands-on job training programme for them. A one-day tour was organized to Ooty, an hour away from Coonoor where they visited the Botanical gardens. |
| Self employment program: |
| Our self employment program for the deaf has been very beneficial for the ones that avail themselves of this offer. As far as the progress is concerned, the group that attends this program sets itself targets in their distribution of the materials for sale and so far they have done very well in achieving these goals. There is also underway a program to rope in more deaf youngsters to avail themselves of this opportunity of employment. |

Our deaf trainees are always attentive observers and fast learners. Perhaps because they have not all the distractions we of the hearing world have. |
